DESCRIPTION
The current Internet
capabilities at Benedict College include several servers and a mainframe for
the administrative unit. All the servers are connected to the main campus hub.
Benedict servers are used for Internet access, library holdings, home page,
E-mail, and computer software. There are 300 workstations throughout the campus
and printer servers in 17 computer labs. The labs are where most of the educational
software is located. The specific measurable objectives of this supplemental
grant will be: (1) the installation of a Local Area Network in the Alumni Hall
Science Building that is dedicated to strengthening the institutional MBRS
research and research training capabilities; (2) an increase in the number of
MBRS grant applications submitted to NIGMS as a result of easier access to
remote databases, libraries, research and sharing scientific information,
interacting with the NIH, and communicating with colleagues throughout the
world; and (3) an increase in the efficiency of exchanging and use of
information among the science faculty on campus. The goal of this supplemental
grant is to create a Collaborative Research Learning Environment (CRLE) by installing
equipment for a Local Area Network (LAN) that will strengthen the institutional
MBRS research and research training capabilities. The goal and measurable
objectives will be accomplished by the installation of a new and reliable LAN
in the Biological and Physical Sciences Department. These goals will be evaluated by the degree of compliance with
the above stated measurable objectives. These goals will contribute to
furthering these programmatic outcomes and goals of the MBRS Program by
enabling the MBRS Program at Benedict College, through the installation of a
new communications infrastructure, to strengthen its long-term research and
research training~ capabilities.
